Activity Hour At Madison Tower

At Madison Towers we get together to have fun and enjoy spending time with some great seniors. It's very uplifting to come and join us for an hour and a half of fun games, crafts and music. We all need a little joy in our lives and the best way to receive it, is to give it. It's that easy! Volunteers ages 12-15 may attend with an adult.

Join other volunteers for fun reading and writing activities with 5 - 12 year olds. We will be using short stories, creative writing exercises and other fun ideas to engage kids in the joys of reading.

Crafty Kids Club At The Caritas Village

The Caritas Village is a non-profit community center, coffee shop and cultural art center located in the Binghamton neighborhood. Their mission is to break down the walls of hostility between the races and to build bridges of love and trust between the rich and those made poor. The art center is a positive alternative to the street corners for the neighborhood youth.

Volunteers are needed to help out with various arts and craft activities that will allow the children in this neighborhood to take ownership of something positive in their community. No artistic experience is necessary, just bring a smile and an open mind!

Feast For Friends

Join us each month as we share reading, craft and play activities with youngsters at the Hope and Healing Center. Hope and Healing is an extension of the Church Health Center committed to helping people live healthy lifestyles.

Please wear tennis shoes and long pants or jeans to this project. No shorts or sleeveless shirts, please. You must be at least 18 to participate.

Monday Night Live At The Manor!

St. Peter Manor is a Senior apartment community located in the heart of Midtown Memphis. In addition to providing a safe, affordable and convenient place to live, St. Peter is bubbling with activity for these lively seniors. Monday Night Live @ The Manor will include karaoke, game night, movie night just to name a few! Volunteers will be responsible for setting up the night's program, greeting and seating the residents, assisting in the activity, and breaking down/cleaning up the activity center. It will be a hoot!

Protect Yourself With Friends For Life

Volunteers are needed to help put together safer sex protection kits that will protect against sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy. Kits are handed out daily and by request to visitors of Friends For Life. All materials will be provided by Friends For Life.

Read To Me At St. Jude

This is a great way to spend your lunch break! Volunteers will read with and entertain kids waiting for their appointments at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Volunteers who speak Spanish are encouraged to participate!

Sunny Meadows Pet Play

A little love and special attention will make these dogs and cats very grateful! Come join in some one on one interaction with the rescued animal residents of Sunny Meadows Safe Haven for Pets. Please wear long pants and sleeves that can get dirty and closed toed shoes. Many of these lonely animals like to get up close and personal!

Trail Blazing At Lichterman Nature Center*

Enjoy the natural wonders of Lichterman Nature Center's center city forest and help keep the trails accessible at the same time! Help remove weeds, alien privet plants and debris from sections of pebbled trails that wind through three miles of wooded wonderland. Bring a picnic and enjoy Lichterman's many wild spaces after the project! Volunteers should wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, long pants and long-sleeve shirts. We also encourage volunteers to bring their own work gloves, water, and even a snack if you'd like. The necessary tools will be provided. Volunteers ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ushering At Circuit Playhouse*

Join us as we help support a local theater company AND catch a great show! Volunteer Mid-South FLEX volunteers will help pass out programs, usher patrons to their seats and then have the chance to enjoy the show. 2010 FedEx "Rock-n-Roll" Bike MS Event

The bike ride starts at Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS and heads to Harrah�s Casino in Tunica, MS. Cyclists ride over 150 miles over two days to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. Volunteers with a wide range of talents and skills are needed. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th. There are many jobs to choose from including cyclist registration, rest stop help, lunch and dinner set-up and clean-up, decorations and cheering at the finish line! Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by and adult or guardian.

Assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching. Academy Tutoring Project Tutors

If you love reading or are really good in math...share your strengths with a child who wants to succeed! The Academy Tutoring Project serves five innovative charter schools in Memphis. Here are some of the reasons you should get involved:

***It's only an hour a week, and you can build the legacy of a lifetime!

***Flexible tutoring times are available to fit almost any schedule, no matter how hectic your life might be.

***Work one-on-one with children that are not at grade level but want to exceed academically.

***No need for an education background-training is provided.

Adoption Day Volunteer

Assist Fayette County Animal Rescue on Pet Adoption Days. Whole or partial shifts are available. Volunteers are needed at the Rossville shelter for pickup and drop-off as well at the adoption location. Adoption Days are held at various locations in Shelby County every Saturday. Adoption Day Volunteers

DeSoto Animal Rescue Society needs animal adoption days volunteers on Saturdays from 11-4 and some Sundays from 11-4 at various locations including PetCo at 205 Goodman Road and PetSmart at Hacks Cross and Winchester. Support is also needed for various special fundraising events throughout the year.

Advocate For Seniors/Volunteer Ombudsman Representative Training

Advocate for the rights of nursing home residents in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale Counties through MIFA's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. After a 12-hour training and certification, you will visit an assigned nursing home once a week and help to promote good care and resident rights. Training will take place on October 19 - 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, at MIFA, 910 Vance Ave. All three training sessions are required for certification.

Animal Lover

Provide shelter dogs and cats with love, companionship, attention, exercise and training. Walk and socialize dogs. Assist with dog play groups. Teach basic skills that will help dogs find a home quickly.

Animal Photographer

Fayette County Animal Rescue needs volunteers to take photos of rescues to post on Petfinder.com. We post three pictures of each animal to give potential adopters a good idea of the size and appearance of the animals. If you are good at taking digital pictures of moving targets this would be a great way to assist us in finding homes for our rescues.

Animal Shelter Secretary

Fayette County Animal Rescue needs a volunteer from 12pm to 4pm, Monday through Friday to answer phones, process paperwork and perform various clerical tasks.

Animal Taxi

Pick animals up from the shelter in Rossville and take them to our vet in Oakland in the mornings. Pick up animals in the afternoon (from Oakland vet) and take the back to the shelter in Rossville.

Annie Get Your Gun BACKSTAGE CREW At Theatre Memphis

Theatre Memphis is a non-profit community theatre dedicated to producing professional quality theatrical experiences for both our patrons and volunteers. A Memphis arts institution since 1920, Theatre Memphis is a well establish theatre, staffed with talented professionals, and able to produce very high quality productions. Members of our community have the unique opportunity to learn more about theatre production and hone their talents in a professional setting while enjoying the affable spirit of a community theatre. We invite any interested member of our community to get involved either onstage or backstage.

We offer a variety of positions and would be happy to have you share and expand your talents with us. Ours is an educational theatre, so if you have an area of interest, but not much experience, our department heads would be happy to teach you.

The nature of our volunteer needs requires that most volunteers commit to more than one day of service. For example, to work backstage crew for a show, volunteers must sign up for most of the technical rehearsals and at least half of the performances. Our crew members are assigned specific duties, which they learn during a one to two week technical rehearsal period. They continue to fulfill those duties during the three to four week run of the show. To achieve the best possible show quality (Crew assignments are a vital part of the actual performance.), we must have a crew that is well trained and consistent. Working backstage crew for a show is the position which requires the most time commitment.

These volunteers communicate the winning bid number and amount to the recorders. Retrieve bid information from the recorder and take information to winning bidder for signature and then take the form to the check-out table.

Backyard Wildlife Center

Learn about animal wildlife while you prepare meals and keep animal areas clean at Lichterman. Volunteers needed Tuesdays - Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Commitment is once weekly on weekdays or twice a month on Saturdays for at least six months. You will not have any animal contact the first six months you volunteer.

Bag Packers

Volunteers are needed to assemble Necessities Bags, which are reusable totes filled with bandages and essentials for wound care, hygiene and comfort to support mastectomy patients. Necessities Bags are lovingly assembled by volunteers and are distributed only by medical professionals. Also, someone who can sew comfort pillows is needed.

Bread Trays Drop Off

Wonder Bread donates trays of bread and snacks to Alzheimer's Day Services on a weekly basis. We accumulate the bread trays at our Raleigh LaGrange location. We need a volunteer to pick up the trays and return them to the thrift store on Covington Pike, only a few blocks from our center. Must have a valid driver's license, a car and car insurance.

Build Scenery And Props At Theatre Memphis

Help build and paint sets or props before a show goes into performance.

Volunteers are needed in any of these areas: woodwork, welding, crafts, and light sewing.

Shop hours are Monday-Friday, 10 AM - 5 PM (excluding most Tuesdays)

Everyone who volunteers at Theatre Memphis will receive a comp voucher for a free ticket to the show for which they have helped.

Care Packs

Povide small sacks of snack food such as chips, cookies, mints and a small bottle of water to family members on the Baptist Trinity Hospice unit.

Child Life Volunteer

Child Life volunteers help with recreational activities and play opportunities in group and one-on-one situations by providing a comfortable, accepting and non-threatening environment under the direction of a Child Life Specialist.

Child Life volunteers also assist the specialists with keeping toys clean, shelves stocked and organized, preparing for activities and events and much more.

Shifts are available in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Requirements: Three to four hours per shift each week at a regularly scheduled time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must enjoy children and be sensitive to their needs, be physically able to pick up a child if needed.

Teen Room Requirements: In addition to the above requirements, must be age 25 or older and be willing to adjust to the needs and interests of teenagers.

Comfort Basket Makers

Baptist Trinity Hospice needs comfort basket makers to gather small items for comfort baskets to be delivered to hospice patients. All items may be obtained from dollar stores. Groups may create baskets or have donation drives for particular items. Great group or family project.

Community Service For Children's Evening Program

Dance Works will need responsible leadership fom college age students for early evening hours 4pm-8pm.

Community Crusader

The Shelby County of Early Childhood and Youth needs volunteers to help staff booths at health fairs and community events, assemble information packets, and provide ongoing assistance to the office as needed. Minimum age 18; 12 with an adult.

Volunteers are needed to help in the Community Garden.

Community Representative Training

A Community Representative is a community volunteer who is present during the Department of Children Services (DCS) Child and Family Team Meetings (CFTM) in order to provide a community voice to critical decisions that are made regarding the children and families in DCS custody. The training is open to anyone who wants to make a difference in the life of a child and their family. Each community representative must: complete a background check, attend a 3 hour training, can committee to flexible hours for a six month term or longer.

Cookbook Committee Chairman

A volunteer is needed to serve as the chair of the cookbook committee providing overall leadership and guidance to the committee, works with WSSS staff and committee members to brainstorm and develop cookbook ideas, schedule and lead regular ommittee meetings, ensure that an adequate number of suitable recipes are submitted, and more.

Cooper Young Festival

Needed: marketing assistants- 3 hour shifts preferred

Corey Miller Food Foundation

Volunteers are needed to support the growth of new afterschool programs, giving away school uniforms, free haircuts, school supplies, providing more than 30,000 teen jobs, alternative public assistance, free school shoes, giving away Christmas toys, one million jobs for adults, homeless shelter ministry, free backpacks and church job fairs. Ongoing volunteer support is needed.

Counselor

Counselors work one-on-one with our guests at Hospitality Hub, listening to each individual's situation/needs and responding with the appropriate assistance. Our counselors usually have prior experience with the homeless, either as a social worker or clergy, or through their own personal experiences.

The Crisis Center is a volunteer-powered program, serving as an emotional lifeline through compassionate, non-judgmental, 24-hour live telephone support. Direct Patient Care Volunteer For Methodist Hospice

Methodist Hospice will offer compassionate care and comfort to all persons facing life-limiting illnesses. We will be the leader in providing grief support, education and resources to those we serve.

Volunteers will be part of the Methodist Hospice team as we work to provide end of life care to patients in Shelby, Tipton and Fayette counties in Tennessee, and DeSoto, Tunica, Tate and Marshall counties in Mississippi. Methodist Hospice is also the only pediatric hospice provider in the Mid-South.

Hospice Volunteers provide companionship to patients and rest for their caregivers.

Divas, Darlings And Desserts

Divas, Darlings and Desserts is the culminating fashion show for the WSSS program "Future's Fashion Entrepreneurial Women" scheduled for August 22nd. It also serves as a fundraiser and recognition opportunity for agency volunteers. This is an opportunity for the committee chairman to enhance leadership and organizational skills in special event planning while helping WSSS build positive name recognition and raise funds.

Docent

Conduct tours of artwork at Brooks Museum for children and adults. No experience necessary. Training is provided. After training, volunteer will select one day per week (Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday) or to be available to conduct tours between 10am and 2pm (September through May only). A two year committment is requested. Must communicate effectively and be mobile in order to tour throughout the museum. Training is art history and touring techniques provided, and training is held Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1pm-3pm beginning September 1, 2010 and ending in mid-January, 2011 (excluding holiday weeks).

Dog/Cat Post-Operative Volunteer

Help animals recover after surgery. This includes cleaning ears, trimming nails, and cleaning the incision area.

Energetic Spotters

Volunteers will stand in the audience during the live auction and help the auctioneer by signaling or "spotting" bids as they are made. You will also help runners locate winning bidders. This job is for people that work well in a fast paced environment and are not easily distracted. You will be standing your entire shift, so wear comfortable shoes.

Our general programming here at The Exceptional Foundation is always enhanced by volunteers. Feeding The Need Scan Card Program

Feeding the Need Scan Card Program Volunteers

Volunteers are responsible for servicing a list of grocery stores that will be conducive to their schedule and general area of transit. Mid-South Food Bank will supply volunteers with materials needed for the display, including donation scan cards, point of purchase display card, and the holder itself. Each store�s check-out lanes must be serviced one time a month. The Food Bank will reimburse the volunteer for the cost of travel.

In order to participate in the Feeding the Need Scan Card program, volunteers must possess a valid driver�s license as well as proof of insurance. Additionally, the volunteer will be asked to sign and submit a Hold Harmless waiver form to Mid-South Food Bank.

The hours are completely flexible in conjunction with the volunteer�s schedule, as long as the once-a-month service check-up has been completed for each lane of all stores assigned.

Grant Researcher

Shelby County Schools Education Foundation (SCSEF) is a nonprofit (501(c)(3))-organization dedicated to supporting the Shelby County (Tennessee) Schools in any way that it can short of political advocacy. Such support has manifested itself in recent years in fundraising to fully or partially underwrite a number of special programs � including a lecture series, student art contests, a scholarship program, an alumni recognition event, small grants for unique projects and for innovative teaching techniques across a wide spectrum of disciplines.

The Grant Writer monitors key sources of grant funding opportunities including print and online publications and databases, and develops collaborative relationships with external sources; conducts research on foundation priorities; and meets regularly with agency staff to understand agency priorities, seek projects and provide input on work.

The Judge Table hosts are the welcome committee for debate tournaments and are primarily responsible for collecting and handing out ballots between rounds. We ask for a four hour commitment during the debate tournament. Training takes 30 minutes.

Mobile Pantry Volunteers

Mid-South Food Bank�s Mobile Pantry program needs large groups of volunteers the first two weeks of each month.

What is a mobile pantry? In rural areas of the Mid-South we are meeting the needs of the hungry where no food pantries exist. These rural areas cannot afford a building or refrigeration for a pantry. Volunteers in the rural counties pre-screen and take food orders for the hungry. Mid-South Food Bank fills these orders, loads them in our refrigeration trucks and takes them to the needed counties.

We need group volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays between 9:00 am to 3:30 pm to help us box us the orders to mobilize to rural areas. Groups no larger than 50 please.)

Public Health Reserve Corps/Medical Reserve Corps Volunteer

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program is currently recruiting volunteers to support the Public Health Reserve Corps/Medical Reserve Corps. It has been determined that an infinite number of medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to assist the Health Department in emergency response efforts. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and willing to complete the required training. There are several volunteer roles that are needed, such as, registration clerks, data entry, greeters, supply coordinators, doctors, nurses, social workers, clergy and more.

At 7am on Sunday, October 10th we need runners to participate in a 10K run that will take place in the Wolfchase Galleria Mall. Road To Recovery Driver For American Cancer Society

Transport cancer patients from their home (who have no other form of transportation) to doctor's appointments and treatments. Return them home. Volunteer drivers are the only way these patients can get to life-saving treatments. Drivers needed Monday-Friday mornings.

Romp On The River

Girl Scouts Heart of the South is looking for volunteers to help out with our Romp on the River, a Community Eco Festival hosted by Girl Scouts and Tunica River Park. SCSEF Race For Education

The Shelby County Schools Education Foundation Race for Education is the 2nd largest MRTC sanctioned race in the area. This is an annual event held normally the first or second Sunday in November. We are looking for volunteers to assist in the planning and running of the event. Proceeds from the event fund Shelby County Schools Arts, Music, PE and other specialty programs. The annual participants in the event exceed 3,300. We have vacancies in the planning area as well as need volunteers to work the event in helping with set-up, registration, tee-shirt distribution and other related race activities.

Senior Citizen Support

Senior Game Nights!

Bethel Towers, Inc. is seeking a volunteer or volunteers to commit to an ongoing, once a month bingo or other game activity for seniors to occupy their time. This is a senior citizen facility, and residents have expressed a desire for something interactive other than arts and crafts. Days and hours are flexible, except the 1st and last Thursdays or 2nd Wednesday of each month.

Serve Outdoors-National Day Of Service

Join the volunteers of the Tennessee Water Sentinelss, the Chickasaw Group of the Sierra Club and their coalition partners from 9am-11am on Saturday, September 11th for Serve Outdoors, part of the National Day of Service. We will be removing litter from around a public boat ramp under the A. W. Willis Ave bridge. Please wear clothing appropriate to the conditions and sturdy closed-toe footwear. Please bring work gloves. Trash bags and water will be provided.

Shelby County Courthouse Tour Guides

Tour guides will be taught the history and importance of the Shelby County Courthouse, located at 140 Adams Avenue, with the purpose of sharing this knowledge with students and members of the general public. Volunteers are needed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12pm-2pm.

Shelter Work Day Volunteer

Fayette County Animal Rescue is planning a large-scale shelter work day to make improvements to the shelter in the Spring. Site Leader For Girls Getting Wired

Site leaders are needed at Best Buy on Winchester on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Site leaders will set up registration and refreshment table and report back all information to WSSS. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn about the latest electronic technology that is presented by Best Buy volunteers in each session.

Special Events Committee

Examines the alternative fundraising strategies and makes recommendations for the Board of Director's approval. Upon approval, members plan and implement the special events with assistance from recruited volunteers. Also solicit gifts and in-kind contributions.

Special Events Coordinator

Coordinate special events which includes working with members of the community, other volunteers, planning the events, gathering needed supplies, advertising, etc. Examples of past special events include the Pet Walk for Abused, Abandoned & Neglected Animals, Give Me Shelter, Pedal for Paws, etc. Tasks may include office support, event day activities, planning and preparation, etc.

St. Jude Garden Volunteer

Come and help us grow our St. Jude garden. Garden volunteers assist in the planning, construction, planting, mulching, weeding, watering and harvesting of vegetables used in the Kay Kafe. Grab your gloves and sunscreen and join us in the garden!

Requirements: A love for gardening and enjoy working outdoors is helpful and preferred. Must be physically able to stand, walk, kneel, sit, bend and lift repetitively. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and follow specific instructions. Shifts available between the hours of 6:00 am to 9:00 pm seven days a week.

Volunteers needed during Theatre for Youth events to sell flowers, bumper stickers, & water bottles to guests of children that are performing. Elmwood Cemetery needs volunteers to lead groups on history tours through one of Memphis' most historical cemeteries.

Tutors

Tutor preK-5th graders with homework. Monitor students in class while completing class projects. Be a mentor to students. Volunteers needed Monday-Friday, from 2:30pm-6:00pm, anytime during this time frame.

Tutors

Volunteers at the Hope Tutoring Center, located at the North end of the Bent Tree Apartments, sit around tables and provide "family style" homework help to elementary and middle school students. Tutors, Mentors, And Chaperones For After-school Programs

The Urban Youth Initiative seeks to equip, empower, and support dedicated youth ministers and the local church/Christian community to effectively reach underchurched urban young people with the hope and love of Jesus Christ, and nuture their development into purposeful adulthood. Volunteer to tutor, mentor, or chaperone.

Ushering At Theatre Memphis

Shows patrons to their seats before the show starts, takes tickets, hands out programs. Then feel free to enjoy the show!

Ushering requires a 1.5 � 3 hour commitment, about an hour of which volunteers spend working. Ushers work for 30 minutes before the show, for 15 minutes at intermission, and for about 15 minutes after the show. If there are seats available, (and there usually are at least enough seats for the ushers), ushers are always welcome to watch the show for free.

Ushers must be 16 or older. 12-15 year olds may usher when accompanied by an adult.

Volunteer Clerk

Damascus Road Residential Center offers residential housing along with 24 hour supervision to at-risk youths in a small group environment. A volunteer clerk is needed.

Volunteer Coordinator

This is an ongoing volunteer position.

The volunteer coordinator acts as a liason between the Memphis Urban Debate League, Volunteer Mid-South, and other organizations that provide volunteers for debate tournaments.

Debate tournaments take place monthly from August through March at a different high school or college each month. Debate tournaments run monthly on Fridays from 5:00pm � 8:30pm and Saturdays 8:00am � 9:30pm. Throughout the debate tournaments, we need approximately 50 volunteers to judge debate rounds. Each debate round is 2 hours; we typically ask for a two-round commitment from volunteers.

The volunteer coordinator is responsible for the following:

· Work from an email list of existing volunteers and update that list as new people volunteer.

· Schedule training sessions prior to monthly tournaments.

· Coordinate with the Memphis Urban Debate League�s professional trainer who will lead volunteer training sessions.

· Follow up with volunteers to confirm that they will fulfill their commitments

· After tournaments, follow up with volunteers to evaluate the quality of their experience and make suggestions for how to improve volunteer recruitment and experiences

This debate season, we have three remaining tournaments:

March 12 - 13

Volunteer Judges

Debate judges are the heart of the tournament. During a debate tournament, approximately 100 teams from 20 schools will compete for awards. Judges determine which team wins each round. We ask for a two-round, four hour commitment during tournaments. Training takes 1 hour.

A good judge does the following:

· Pay close attention to the debaters

· Take careful notes

· Make an objective assessment of which team won the round based on the policy issues

· Make a subjective assessment of which students are the best speakers

· Time each speech during the round and give students hand signals of their time

· Follow the prescribed format � we train judges who are not familiar with policy debate

· Fill out a ballot with your decision and reasons for it

SCORE Memphis-Service Corps of Retired Executives volunteers provide confidential one-to-one business counseling and low-cost entrepreneurial training workshops and seminars. We need virtual coaches and have opportunities in marketing, social networking and fundraising.

Our Head Start/Early Head Start program exists to offer a top-quality pre-school education for more than 500 of the highest risk children in Shelby County annually, plus support for their families, completely free of charge.

Love being around children? Get involved with helping the children in your community. The children we serve need positive role models in their lives. HS/EHS Volunteers will assist staff in the classrooms in whatever way necessary, including engagement of children in developmentally appropriate activities, assistance with lesson plans, participation in mealtime, or naptime.

Volunteers will also have exposure to other aspects of the center, including office support and working with Family Services on planning/assisting with parent activities, enrollment, etc.

Be a friend to someone suffering from dementia. Help with activities, engage participant in coversation. Patience is key! Volunteers younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by a supervisor.

Youth Night at Hope Fellowship Baptist Church: Pastor James Williams holds a bible study on Tuesday nights at the church in Bent Tree Apartments. This study is geared specifically for children and youth.
