Ages 18 and up. However, a highly enthusiastic and motivated high school junior or senior may be considered.

We offer a variety of positions and would be happy to have you share and expand your talents with us. Ours is an educational theatre, so if you have an area of interest, but not much experience, our department heads would be happy to teach you.

The nature of our volunteer needs requires that most volunteers commit to more than one day of service. For example, to work backstage crew for a show, volunteers must sign up for most of the technical rehearsals and at least half of the performances. Our crew members are assigned specific duties, which they learn during a one to two week technical rehearsal period. They continue to fulfill those duties during the three to four week run of the show. To achieve the best possible show quality (Crew assignments are a vital part of the actual performance.), we must have a crew that is well trained and consistent. Working backstage crew for a show is the position which requires the most time commitment.

Volunteers are needed in any of these areas: woodwork, welding, crafts, and light sewing.

Shop hours are Monday-Friday, 10 AM - 5 PM (excluding most Tuesdays)

Everyone who volunteers at Theatre Memphis will receive a comp voucher for a free ticket to the show for which they have helped.

Child Life volunteers also assist the specialists with keeping toys clean, shelves stocked and organized, preparing for activities and events and much more.

Shifts are available in inpatient and outpatient settings.  

Requirements: Three to four hours per shift each week at a regularly scheduled time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must enjoy children and be sensitive to their needs, be physically able to pick up a child if needed.

Teen Room Requirements: In addition to the above requirements, must be age 25 or older and be willing to adjust to the needs and interests of teenagers.

Volunteers will be part of the Methodist Hospice team as we work to provide end of life care to patients in Shelby, Tipton and Fayette counties in Tennessee, and DeSoto, Tunica, Tate and Marshall counties in Mississippi. Methodist Hospice is also the only pediatric hospice provider in the Mid-South.

Hospice Volunteers provide companionship to patients and rest for their caregivers.

Volunteers are responsible for servicing a list of grocery stores that will be conducive to their schedule and general area of transit. Mid-South Food Bank will supply volunteers with materials needed for the display, including donation scan cards, point of purchase display card, and the holder itself. Each store’s check-out lanes must be serviced one time a month. The Food Bank will reimburse the volunteer for the cost of travel.

In order to participate in the Feeding the Need Scan Card program, volunteers must possess a valid driver’s license as well as proof of insurance. Additionally, the volunteer will be asked to sign and submit a Hold Harmless waiver form to Mid-South Food Bank.

The hours are completely flexible in conjunction with the volunteer’s schedule, as long as the once-a-month service check-up has been completed for each lane of all stores assigned.

The Grant Researcher will be researching new grant opportunities for our programs. This position will allow our current programs to continue, as well as grant us the opportunity to create new programs and expand those services!

The SCSEF Grant Writer is responsible for identifying new funding sources, developing and submitting written proposals, tracking reporting deadlines and managing the submission of proposals and reports. The Grant Writer with the help of other foundation volunteers will manage all grant writing projects including proposals and letters of inquiry; and is responsible for the grants process including research, identifying prospects, and writing/proofing proposals for submittal to government agencies, and private and corporate foundations. The Grant Writer monitors key sources of grant funding opportunities including print and online publications and databases, and develops collaborative relationships with external sources; conducts research on foundation priorities; and meets regularly with agency staff to understand agency priorities, seek projects and provide input on work.

Qualifications:

• Grant writing experience in a non-profit or closely related field is a plus. Experience in a position that required strong writing and communication skills, such as experience developing proposals, grant applications and progress reports, creating publications, and technical writing

Information Representatives are often the first faces you see when entering one of our facilities and they assist the public in a variety of ways. Information Representatives assist by answering general questions about the hospital, looking up patient information, giving directions and supplying other general information as requested. Typical tasks are customer service in nature and would include sitting, typing, reading, etc.

If you enjoy making other people smile by sharing your smile…we want you! This volunteer role is available at any 1 of our 5 hospital locations.

Judge Table hosts are responsible for the following tasks:

• collect and check all ballots

• distribute pairings

• locate and contact missing judges or replacement judges

• direct judges and debaters to rooms

• work with student volunteers to ensure that debates are started promptly as scheduled

If selected for this program, you will need to submit an application, go through an orientation, receive a TB skin test, turn in 3 references, and be able to make a 6 month commitment to volunteer.

Location is set at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital downtown, however, once you have spoken to a volunteer specialist, your volunteer location will be determined.

What is a mobile pantry? In rural areas of the Mid-South we are meeting the needs of the hungry where no food pantries exist. These rural areas cannot afford a building or refrigeration for a pantry. Volunteers in the rural counties pre-screen and take food orders for the hungry. Mid-South Food Bank fills these orders, loads them in our refrigeration trucks and takes them to the needed counties.

We need group volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays between 9:00 am to 3:30 pm to help us box us the orders to mobilize to rural areas. Groups no larger than 50 please.)

Ushering requires a 1.5 – 3 hour commitment, about an hour of which volunteers spend working. Ushers work for 30 minutes before the show, for 15 minutes at intermission, and for about 15 minutes after the show. If there are seats available, (and there usually are at least enough seats for the ushers), ushers are always welcome to watch the show for free.

In general times and dates are:

Wed- Thu 7-10 PM

Fri-Sat 7:30- 10:30 PM

Sun 2-5 PM

Ushers must be 16 or older. 12-15 year olds may usher when accompanied by an adult.

The volunteer coordinator acts as a liason between the Memphis Urban Debate League, Volunteer Mid-South, and other organizations that provide volunteers for debate tournaments.

Debate tournaments take place monthly from August through March at a different high school or college each month. Debate tournaments run monthly on Fridays from 5:00pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 8:00am – 9:30pm. Throughout the debate tournaments, we need approximately 50 volunteers to judge debate rounds. Each debate round is 2 hours; we typically ask for a two-round commitment from volunteers.

The volunteer coordinator is responsible for the following:

· Work from an email list of existing volunteers and update that list as new people volunteer.

· Schedule training sessions prior to monthly tournaments.

· Coordinate with the Memphis Urban Debate League’s professional trainer who will lead volunteer training sessions.

· Follow up with volunteers to confirm that they will fulfill their commitments

· After tournaments, follow up with volunteers to evaluate the quality of their experience and make suggestions for how to improve volunteer recruitment and experiences

This debate season, we have three remaining tournaments:

January 22 – 23

February 19 – 20

March 12 - 13

A good judge does the following:

· Pay close attention to the debaters

· Take careful notes

· Make an objective assessment of which team won the round based on the policy issues

· Make a subjective assessment of which students are the best speakers

· Time each speech during the round and give students hand signals of their time

· Follow the prescribed format – we train judges who are not familiar with policy debate

· Fill out a ballot with your decision and reasons for it

Love being around children? Get involved with helping the children in your community. The children we serve need positive role models in their lives. HS/EHS Volunteers will assist staff in the classrooms in whatever way necessary, including engagement of children in developmentally appropriate activities, assistance with lesson plans, participation in mealtime, or naptime.

Volunteers will also have exposure to other aspects of the center, including office support and working with Family Services on planning/assisting with parent activities, enrollment, etc.
